Lighted Articulating Safe Ear Curette

One of the Featured Products on our website this week is the Lighted Articulating Safe Ear Curette from Bionix, and is a very popular item in the American Medicals catalog.

The Bionix Lighted Articulating Ear Curette combines the two greatest
innovations in ear curettage; visualization with light and magnification,
and articulation for the ability to work behind an occlusion in the ear canal because of the unique hinged design. The easy to maneuver tip articulates up to 90 degrees to assist in the removal of cerumen (earwax) from the ear canal and foreign bodies from the ear and nose.

Once positioned beyond an obstructive cerumen plug or foreign body, usually through a space between the ear canal wall and occlusion, the tip can be articulated by simply sliding the thumb toward the light source. The cerumen or foreign body can then be pulled straight from the ear canal without using a blind sweeping motion.

The Lighted Articulating Ear Curette is intended for single-patient use. Discontinue use of the curette if the hinge no longer functions. Re-use of the curette can cause the hinge to stop functioning. Use of alcohol wipes or cold sterilization can also negatively affect the functioning of the curette. The light source and magnification lens are designed for multi-procedure use.

Features and Benefits

  • Visualization – A brilliant white light is projected to the tip of the articulating curette illuminating the ear canal. The magnification lens enhances the view of the ear canal to visualize cerumen.
  • Manipulation – Allows the physician to work behind cerumen plug or foreign body eliminating the need for the top down sweeping motion that can abrade the ear canal.
  • Convenience – Eliminates the need to use a separate light source or magnification device in an attempt to enhance visualization.
  • Safety – Illumination and magnification improves procedural accuracy, avoiding the risk of injury from blind curettage with stainless steel curettes.
  • Made in the U.S.A.

Instructions for Cerumen Removal
  1. Position the patient comfortably on the examination table. Smaller children may be restrained on their parent’s lap or shoulder during the procedure.
  2. Using an otoscope, examine the ear canal noting the presence and location of any cerumen.
  3. Straighten the ear canal by gently pulling the ear up and away from the patient. Position the tip of the Lighted Articulating Ear Curette adjacent to the cerumen, or behind it if there is room between the
cerumen and the ear canal wall.
  4. Using the thumb and index finger, slide the top and bottom halves of the Lighted Articulating Ear Curette against each other. This will cause the tip of the curette to bend.
  5. Hold the tip in the flexed position and gently draw the cerumen from the ear canal.
  6. Use an otoscope to re-examine the ear canal, noting the presence and location of any remaining cerumen.
  7. Repeat the above procedure as needed to remove any remaining cerumen, or until the tympanic membrane can be adequately visualized.
  8. Remove the otoscope and discard the curette tip.
